Inside the Marathon Miraflores sports store

Exploring the Sports and Suitcases site will show you just how much expat sport there is in Lima. Like me, you may discover a sport that you weren’t expecting to play during your time in Lima (hockey in my case - and to save some of you the trouble, I don’t mean ice hockey!), and now you’re on the hunt for sports shops in Miraflores to buy the necessary sports clothes and equipment.

Plus, there’s only so much you can take with you when you make a big move abroad. Given how it can feel like you need to pack your whole life with you, sports clothes and equipment can sit low down on a list of priorities.

Since many expats and nomads base themselves in Miraflores or the nearby districts, here is a breakdown of five general and specialist sports stores in Miraflores where you can buy sports clothing, equipment and accessories.

General sports stores in Miraflores

Marathon

Location: Avenida Ricardo Palma, Miraflores 15074
Other locations across Lima

Marathon is the premier sports retailer in Peru*. Marathon stores are likely similar to the kinds of sports stores in your own country. Whilst Marathon doesn’t cater to the wide and more niche array of sports and activities that say, a Decathlon does (there’s no Decathlon in Peru, by the way), it still sells clothing, accessories and equipment for your major sports.

Marathon carries all your well-known international brands, and you can buy officially licensed (domestic and international) football kits here. That, of course, means you’ll pay accordingly. Marathon also offers a wide selection of footwear catering to different types of sports and activities. Sounds great - unless, like me, you’ve got big feet!

Marathon stores have a bright, modern feel to them, and their Miraflores branch even incorporates a quirky little athletics track to help guide you around.

Here’s how Marathon themselves introduce their Miraflores store:

*Incidentally, Marathon is an Ecuadorian company, hence why you see them as a kit supplier for the Ecuadorian national football team.

Mitsuwa

Location: Av. José Larco 343, Miraflores 15074
Other locations in Centro and Surco

The self-proclaimed Casa del Deportista, Mitsuwa has been established in Lima since the 50’s. The Miraflores store is rather modest, and it seems more like a place for balls, bags and equipment, but it has cheaper options than the nearby Marathon. Many items are displayed behind glass counters, which, for a sports store, is a new one for me!

Specialist sports stores in Miraflores

This is not a definitive list of specialist sports stores in Miraflores. Small businesses are a plenty in Peru, and Miraflores is no different, so you will likely come across more sports stores by simply exploring Miraflores.

Proiron

Location: Av. Reducto 833, Miraflores 15074

PROIRON specialises in home gym and fitness equipment. Workout benches, weights, martial arts equipment, mats and mobility and recovery tools are all there, and waiting for you to try out before purchasing.

If fitting out your place with workout equipment isn’t practical, Miraflores, and specifically the Malecón, is a great location to do outdoor workouts thanks to the considerable number of callisthenics zones.

HK Trading

Location: Calle Tarata 249, Miraflores 15074

HK Trading is a swim shop that sells international brands. It specialises in swimming and diving/snorkelling, so you will find everything from swimwear, caps and goggles to masks, fins and lifejackets.

Pádel Nuestro

Location: Calle Berlín 363, Miraflores 15074

Pádel Nuestro is a Spanish specialist padel store, with its one Peruvian location found in Miraflores. It is a compact, well-stocked store that sells padel rackets, clothing and accessories.

Sports stores outside of Miraflores

Explore neighbouring districts to Miraflores, such as San Isidro, to discover other sports stores, and particularly specialist sports stores. For runners in Lima, or, in fact, cyclists and swimmers, Takano Store, for example, is located in San Isidro.

Then, there are all the little sports stores hidden away in centro commerciales or large buildings alongside other businesses around Lima. These are often great options if you’re after sporting goods at lower prices. Speaking of which…

Polvos Azules

Location: Av. Paseo de la República, La Victoria 15033

Inside one of the enrances of Polvos Azules in Lima.

Polvos Azules deserves its own page, such is the size of the place and the vast range of goods on sale here. Product categories are concentrated within Polvos Azules, but if you check out the stores on the basement level and level one near Avenida Paseo de la República, you’ll find several stores selling the same kinds of sports clothes and equipment. I bought a running belt and press-up bars for not a lot of money. Go in there with an idea of what things might cost and be prepared to haggle, as items don’t have price tags. Polvos Azules isn’t that kind of place. Card machines often charge a 5% transaction fee, so cash is better.

What is Polvos Azules?

Polvos Azules is an informal “shopping centre”/indoor bazaar made up of hundreds of small, independent stores lining narrow passageways (pasajes), spread over three levels. Think clothing, shoes and electronics, all at very low prices. (So, no, it may not be a genuine item of clothing you’re looking at!) Embrace the experience! Open daily 9am–9pm.

Unfortunately, I had no luck buying (UK) size 13 astros (turf shoes). That was kind of to be expected, but if I were going to find them anywhere in Lima, it would have been at Polvos Azules. However, you should be able to find someone there who knows how to source shoes in larger sizes. If you do, you’ll pay what you would spend back home because the shoes will be imported, and, therefore, original (because of the large size) and not counterfeit like many of the other pairs of shoes at Polvos Azules. At least, that’s how they explained it to me.

Where is Polvos Azules in Lima?

Polvos Azules is located near downtown Lima, opposite Parque de la Exposición and just north of the Estadio Naciónal. So, perfectly accessible from Miraflores. Lima traffic means it can be a mission to get there, so your best bet would be to hop on the Metropolitano. It goes without saying, but avoid rush hour. Get off at Estación Central and walk back south where you came from for 7/8 minutes.

Final thoughts whistle: Where to buy sports clothes and equipment in Miraflores and Lima

Marathon is the best sports store to meet your sporting needs in Miraflores. Its spacious, modern store carries all the international brands you’re already familiar with, with pricing to match.

If you have the time and patience and prefer a “rawer” edge to your shopping, head to Polvos Azules in La Victoria for sporting goods at low-end prices. The sports stores within Polvos Azules are best for sports clothing and footwear, as well as basic fitness equipment.
